We don’t like to play favorites at nylmedia but the social media team was very ecstatic to see Pinterest defend its title as Best Social Media in this year’s Webby Awards. The pinboard-style platform took home the title of Best Social Media in both the web and app categories this year. With over 48.7 million users, Pinterest allows brands to tell their stories and connect with audiences with inspiring imagery, useful tips and beautiful products.

We’ve been huge fans of the platform since it launched in 2010, but this year Pinterest gave us more features to fall for: an entirely new interface, business accounts for brands and pin analytics. Its no surprise Pinterest keeps a hold on the top social media spot across devices. The visual nature of the platform and intuitive design taps into photography’s high engagement factor. Several blogs have adopted a “Pinterest-like” layout to make content consumption easier, Facebook is even moving to a more photo-centric model with the new News Feed design.

Here are three ways to boost your Pinterest presence:

1) Experiment with long pins. Research shows that images with a height of 800 pixels tend to get more average repins than short pins. If you have new products that are a smaller size, stack them on top of each other to increase engagement.

2) Don’t skip the product description. The words used to describe your pin are almost as important as the actual image itself as this is the only way Pinners cansearch for old pins not visible their current feed. The most effective length is between 200 and 300 characters. Use space wisely and include key words relevant to the board theme as well as the specific pin.

3) Leverage trending themes to build boards relevant to products you sell that will leverage the attention of a wider audience. Pantone announced Emerald as the Color of the Year. For a jewelry brand, building a board with this theme and continuously adding to it for the duration of the year is a great way to remain top of mind. JCK Marketplace highlighted our client Effy Jewelry’s “Emerald City” pinboard as one of the must-follow emerald-themed boards on Pinterest.
